The Greatest Networker in the World by John Milton Fogg is considered one of the all time classics in MLM.  What's amazing is that the book is a fiction book and typically network marketing classics are non fictional in nature.  However, it's more than a mere fiction book.  It's along the lines of Aesop's Fables for network marketing.
 
The Psychology of Network Marketing
 

The story line features a struggling distributor that is frustrated with his lack of success in network marketing.  Considering that the large majority of distributors in network marketing consider themselves to be "struggling," that alone allows the storyline to resonate with its readers.
 
In the story, the network marketing distributor attends a hotel meeting. He decides that this will be the last network marketing meeting he will ever attend.  While there, he is introduced to a very successful network marketer known in the book as The Greatest Networker in the World.  The distributor shares his frustrations and the Greatest Networker agrees to teach him the network marketing business success.
 
To the distributor's surprise instead of learning the how to's of doing this business, the Greatest Networker instead shares philosophies and the psychology of network marketing. 
 
The major premise of the book is that you must work on your personal development; your attitude and your mindset so that you can BE successful before you HAVE success in your business.
 
Too many distributors in network marketing are looking for the magic cookie cutter MLM systems that are going to help them explode their network marketing business. The truth is there is no magic cookie cutter.  The Greatest Networker reveals this to the struggling distributor by showing him how to focus on his belief and his mindset first.
 
A Goal Bigger Than Winning In Network Marketing?
 
What I appreciate about this network marketing classic is how John Milton Fogg is able to so clearly articulate the importance and power of having a strong reason why for doing network marketing.  Too many distributors focus on money.  However, a goal of making money isn't strong enough to drive you to success, or to become a network marketing leader.
 
There is a conversation between the struggling distributor and the Greatest Networker about focus that provides vital insight. He points out that the struggling distributor is focused on his own personal survival and creating his own success.
 
The problem with this self based mentality is that it doesn't give you the right mindset necessary for success in network marketing.  The Greatest Networker asks the struggling distributor if he would be concerned about people saying "Yes" or "No" if his focus was on the success of the entire network marketing industry.
 
Seen in this perspective, the problems currently seen as big problems -  like the fact that you haven't sponsored anyone this month into your network marketing business, are now perceived as having less significance.  Problems that used to take you out the network marketing game for a week or more at a time now have little or no impact on you and your business.
 
If you are looking for a book that is going to teach you step by step how to do network marketing, you can pass on this book. 
 
However,  if you are looking for a book that will teach you the mindset that separates the top income earners from the average distributors in the network marketing industry, this book is a MUST have for your library.
