Is Personal Development Really Vital to MLM Success?

If you examine the majority of network marketing companies out there, most of them place a strong emphasis on personal development. By encouraging the distributors to read books, listen to audios, attend seminars and associate with the right people, you create the right mindset necessary for success.
Is this really true or is this just a gimmick so that there is something to point to if a distributor isn't having success?
Network Marketing Failure May or May Not Be Because You Need Personal Development
There is no question in my mind that personal development is vital to the success of the MLM distributor.
If you look at people who have been successful in a wide variety of areas in life, you will find that the most successful people have made a commitment to personal development.
They are constantly looking for ways to improve themselves.
The problem in MLM isn't that personal development doesn't provide value.
The real problem with MLM is that personal development in many cases is used as an excuse to explain the reason a distributor is not having success or not "following the system."
In some extreme cases, the personal development system is not so much designed for the benefit of the distributors but for the benefit of the up line leadership as a profit center to their organization.
There are also instances when personal development is used as an excuse by an upline leader.
Suppose you have a distributor in your network marketing organization that is showing up to all of the meetings. This distributor is doing all the right activity and has been doing so for a while. However, this distributor fails to get results. As a leader, you really don't know why this person isn't having success.
For some leaders, instead of admitting that they don't know, they automatically point to personal development.
"If you had a stronger level of belief in what you are doing, you would be getting better results than what you have been getting."
In some situations, this is absolutely true. There are distributors who are doing the right activities. However, they don't have the right attitudes to accompany these activities. Therefore they don't get the results they would expect.
Why Some Network Marketers Struggle In Spite of Commitment to Personal Development
However, there are other distributors who are committing to personal development on a regular basis, yet they still aren't getting the results. Why is this?
There are two reasons.
The first reason a distributor may not be succeeding, even though he or she is doing the right activity, is simply because although the activity might be right, the flavor of the activity might be wrong for that distributor.
There are some network marketing distributors who are doing a lot of belly to belly marketing that would really be more suited for internet marketing. Vice versa, there are some distributors who are doing internet marketing that would really be more suited for belly to belly marketing.
The second reason a distributor might not be succeeding is because the network marketing industry might not be right for this person.
Network marketing is certainly not for everybody and we cannot continue to assume that it is if we want to help our team members get what they want out of life.
There are some people who simply have callings in other areas and no matter how much personal development they engage in, they will never be successful in this industry.
Personal development is absolutely vital to the success of a network marketing distributor. The key is to understand that it shouldn't be used as a "catch all excuse" to explain the distributor's lack of success.
