Why The Economics Don't Add Up Without Affiliate
Marketing In The MLM Mix
July 10, 2008 4:37 PM
There simply isn't enough money paid out on the
sale of a product in MLM to support the early stages of building a network marketing team (to generate
the larger residual income)… unless you add in affiliate marketing. Let's look at this...
In a legitimate network marketing company, the parent company should be paying the majority,
if not ALL of the commissions based on when a sale of a product takes place.
The limitation with this is that the company can only pay you a certain amount based on the sale of
that productthere's nothing else in place for cash flow.
As just one example, suppose you are with a network marketing company and
your premier product is a health based juice. A bottle of the juice retails for $40.
Even if your company pays you 50%, the most you can earn on that bottle of juice is only $20.
Considering the average distributor has $100 to $200 in monthly expenses, under this scenario you
would need to sell 5 to 10 bottles a month just to break even. Keep in mind you also need to
keep those customers buying monthly in order to earn residuals. Let's also keep in mind that
when I refer to the average monthly expenses only being $100 to $200 a month, I am NOT referring
to advertising costs, like for example, if you are a part of some type of co-op advertising program.
I'm only referring to the costs of the basics, like your minimum product order, meetings, trainings, web
site, voice communication system, etc. This is the challenge and one of the biggest reasons why many
distributors quit the industry. I'm not talking about the people that just join to join and who were
never really committed to begin with. I'm talking about the people that actually plugged into the system,
got on the conference calls, went to the meetings but just couldn't make it happen. It's tough building
the business when your spouse wants to know why you are going to "one of those meetings"; and
last month you got a check for $10, but spent $100. But you say "Ha, I don't have to
worry about that! I sell a personal development seminar and I get paid $1000 per sale!";
If you get paid $1000 a sale, you REALLY need to pay attention to this more than the distributor
selling a $40 bottle of juice. Here's why. How many times have you spoken to a prospect,
everything looks good but when it comes down to it, they simply don't have the $2000, $5000, whatever the
price is for that seminar you get paid $1000 a sale for? If you're like most distributors in a company
like that, it happens a LOT! Chances are with the economy being the way it is, it's happening even more
frequently than it happened before. Who cares if you make $1000 a sale if it takes you 6 months to get your
first sale! Then you get all excited until you realize that you have to pass that sale up to your
upline because you're in a 1-up or 2-up compensation plan! The challenge with network marketing is that
because of the price points of the products we market, it is extremely difficult for most distributors to
create cash flow retailing the products. In most cases, the price point is either too low to create
significant profits or too high to create enough consistent volume in sales. Yes, if your organization
grows large enough you can leverage the team sales for a supportive income, and beyond. But as we've stated, that
takes a while. You have to be able to sustain yourself in the long-run. You also need to be able
to show prospective opportunity seekers a successful model. It's hard to do if they're looking at very little
upfront income coming in with a long-term plan. The Solution is Adding Affiliate Marketing
to Network Marketing As we've eluded, there is a solution to this problem that if you implement
it, can allow you to generate upfront cash flow that you can re-invest back into your business, put some checks
in your bank account to satisfy the spouse and keep you in business until the residuals from building a network
marketing organization kick in and are able to produce a significant monthly income for you and your family.
The solution is to implement the strategy of affiliate marketing into your business.
What is affiliate marketing exactly? Affiliate marketing is when you
promote products and the company pays you a percentage of the price of the product. These could be
informational products like e-books or services, software – anything.
It's actually very similar to network marketing, the only difference is that they typically pay
you on one level only, perhaps two maximum. You are not encouraged to spend time developing a
team to create income in affiliate marketingthat's why you're able to usually earn more on the sale
upfrontit's not being shared with multiple levels of people. The sale can even produce a lead
for your network marketing business. This is accomplished by linking to affiliate products that are related to
your network marketing opportunity (services, information products, books, etc).
